Coffee’s  on, and this morning it’s a particular favorite of mine - Newman’s Own Special Blend packaged by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Newman’s Own Special Blend really is special - it’s a blend of dark roasted Indonesian coffee and medium roasted Central American coffee that’s bold, rich and smooth as silk. If that blend sounds familiar, it could be because I spent weeks rhapsodizing here about my own blend of medium roasted Mexican and dark-roasted Ethiopian, or medium roasted Guatemalan and dark-roasted Sumatran - it’s a flavor combination that I really love. The Indonesian coffees have tend to be rich and smoky, almost earthy, while Central American coffees are lighter, with a nice snap to the flavor. The Indonesian coffee adds depth and complexity to the brighter Central American flavor, while the Central American coffee cuts the earthy flavor that can sometimes be almost “dirty” and thins the heavy mouth-feel of the Indonesian coffees.

Newman’s Own Special blend is also Fair Trade and Certified Organic - so was yesterday’s coffee, for the record - which makes it an even better choice for me, of course. In addition, I really feel good purchasing Newman’s Own and Newman’s Own Organics products, because I know that the profits go to good causes. Newman’s Own Organics is owned by Nell Newman, daughter of Paul Newman. She follows her father’s policy of contributing the royalties and profits from her company to charity. The royalties from Newman’s Special Blend go to CoffeeKids to help women in Oaxaca, Mexico raise chickens so that they can sell organic eggs and provide their families with a healthy protein.

If you like dark roasts, but think they’re sometimes too “strong”, or like light roasts, but want to try something with a richer flavor, this is the coffee for you. It’s especially nice if you like your coffee with cream, like I do - the flavor is rich enough to come through even if you use a heavy cream.

Today’s Assignment - Analyze a Top Blog in Your Niche

I took the easy way out to find a “top blog” in my niche - I typed “coffee blog” into the Google search box and visited the top site listed there - Coffee Sage. My first insight came even before I started skimming the site (which hasn’t had a new post since September, btw) - I’m not targeting the most logical keywords for my blog - doh! Mind you - not the most profitable keywords, not the ones that will put the best advertising on my blog, but the ones that people would most likely use to find a coffee blog if they were looking for a blog about coffee - can you guess what words they might be?

Based on that, I’m making a couple of changes - first, my tag line, which I changed yesterday from “Coffee, coffee and more coffee” to “Coffee for the Rest of the World” will now be “A Coffee Blog For the Rest of the World”. Second, I’ll be making a point of using the words “coffee blog” a bit more often in my posts. Meanwhile, I’ve got a considerable amount more analyzing to do.

How about the rest of you? Did you find a “top blog in your niche”? Did you learn anything from analyzing it? Are you considering making any changes because of your analysis? Share what you learned in a comment - long comments welcomed on this one, since the assignment doesn’t call for a post. However, since the assignment doesn’t call for a post, how about this - post a link to the About page from your blog in Mr. Linky so we can all get to know each other a little better.

    Hi!

My challenge was to figure out my “niche” - I suppose technically mine is an expat blog, but I do not like that term and do not use it — is that lesson number one? LoL!

Anyways, I found The 2009 Lonely Planet Travel Blog Awards - Winners and will be taking a closer look at the winners, especially of the expat and travel sections.

    Cheers,
    *lynne*
