Only the Good Friday: Saints Coffee
I know I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. I love coffee people. I don’t know if coffee people are good because their business brings them into contact with abject poverty and they see a chance to help alleviate those conditions, or if good people are drawn to the coffee business because it is an industry so in need of good people. Whatever the reason, nearly every day I stumble across a coffee company that is doing good in the world and can’t help wanting to help spread the word.
This morning, I ran across Saints Coffee, a small-batch micro-roaster based in Colorado Springs. What’s great about Saint’s Coffee? This is from their front page:
~ Saint’s Drinkers ~
You’ve fed over 8,500
Children!
~ To Date ~
Children Fed - 8,505
Meals Paid For - 255,147
Right. Saint’s Coffee contributes a full one-third of their profits to two organizations who are committed to providing meals for orphans and hungry children in Africa and in Russia. In fact, for every full pound of Saint’s signature blend, Saint George the Dragon Blend, sold, Saint’s contributes enough to feed one child for a month through Hopechest.org and 5for50, two organizations that feed hungry children and have been doing so for years.
Saint’s Coffee also commits to roasting your coffee when you order it, and shipping it when it’s ready to ship, so you know you’re getting fresh coffee for best flavor. They make the roasting date on each bag of coffee - and they ship in full one pound bags, not the 10-12 ounce “pound” bags that so many of the supermarkets use.
Of course, they only sell Fair Trade organic coffee, so you’re already doing good when you buy Saint’s Coffee - but it’s nice to know that the company steps up to do even more good with their platform. Their current cost: $11.95 a pound for whole bean coffee in a variety of blends from light to dark roast - comparable to what you’ll pay for any specialty brand coffee that doesn’t hand over part of their profits to do good works.
About Only the Good Friday:
Only the Good Friday is a grass-roots blog movement started by Shelly at This Eclectic Life, who decided to devote one day a week to posting ONLY GOOD THINGS. She’s been joined in her stand for optimism by a growing group of bloggers who leave their snide and snarky sides behind on one day each week to post about what’s GOOD in their worlds. You can visit Shelly or drop by any of these bloggers who have been regularly participating in Only the Good Friday to get your shot of optimism for the week.
