Coffee Break

I’m celebrating National Donut Day a day late here at Coffee Break Blog because yesterday was crazy busy so I never did manage to get out for a donut. Today, I’m planning on heading out to my local Dunkin Donuts for one of my all-time favorite donuts - a Vanilla Kreme Filled donut. They’ve been around ever since I was a little girl - a yeast-raised donut filled with thick white vanilla kreme frosting - think Twinkie filling on steroids. There’s enough sugar in the stuff to glue a wedding cake together, and it’s piped in with a pastry bag so that it forms a puff that looks like a soft serve ice cream. To top it off, the donut is dusted with confectioners sugar, so the whole thing is enough to satisfy the most rabid sweet tooth for months.

Which could also describe the winner of Dunkin Donuts Create Dunkins Next Donut contest - the Toffee for Your Coffee donut, created by  Jeff Hager of Hoover, Alabama. It’s a glazed sour cream cake donut topped with - I kid you not - chopped up Heath bars. It won’t actually be available at your local Dunkin Donuts until the fall, and I probably won’t try one even though Heath bars are my favorite candy bar of all time. Chocolate and donuts just have never really mixed for me even though chocolate covered donuts are one of Dunkins most popular favorites.

The contest got more than 130,000 entries of which 12 finalists were chosen. Other entries included Sweet and Fruity Guava Jelly and Chocolate Covered Banana Creme donuts. You can check out the donut gallery (and drool over them) at the Dunkin Donuts web site.
